Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Strengthen Our Sisters! Volunteers are very valuable to our organization. We are currently in great need of volunteers in all areas. All volunteers are required to meet with a respresentative of the shelter for an orientation. The orientation will cover Strengthen Our Sister's philosophy and approach to working with women and children surviving domestic, sexual violence and homelessness. Volunteer Opportunities
Crisis Line & Emergency Shelter: Volunteers provide support to adult and child residents, answer the crisis line, complete phone screens and intakes, and ensure the safe and consistent functioning of shelter.
Children's Program: Volunteers spend time with children in play and educational activities. Volunteers also conduct children's intakes and family histories and co-facilitate our kids' domestic violence group and our parenting group.
Transitional Program: Volunteers provide on-going support, information, and resources to families who have left shelter and are participating in our transitional program. Outreach Program: Outreach advocates provide drop-in services including information, referrals, support, and advocacy to women and children in the community.
Legal Clinic: If you wish to help low-income people resolve their legal issues, we have many volunteer opportunities to fit your interests and schedule, including: full representation cases, brief services, legal advice and educational programs. We need volunteers primarily in the following areas of law:
- Family
- Landlord/Tenant
- Real Estate
- Wills/Probate
- Administrative Law
- Civil
- Bankruptcy
Computer Technology : Currently we are in great need of volunteers with technical skills. These include familiarity with computers (hardware, software, or both), servers, networks, email, Microsoft programs, wiring, personal and business sized printers etc.
Administrative: Volunteers provide clerical assistance, data input and computer work in the main office and help in the publication and distribution of mailings.
Facilities and Donations: Volunteers assist with house maintenance and in sorting and distributing donations.
Fundraising: Volunteers stuff appeal letters, help plan special events, and approach individuals and corporations for contributions.
Special Volunteers Projects:
Volunteers with a special talent are welcome to share those talents with the women and children at the Shelter.Special projects may include: Self-esteem workshops, Craft workshops, Career training, Resume writing, Dress for Success, Art therapy, Dance or Movement therapy, Play therapy, Storytelling, and other unique presentation.
Maintenance Volunteers: Volunteers working on the grounds of the Shelter work to maintain the grounds by mowing, edging, weeding, and trimming the yards. Volunteers helping with maintenance do light carpentry, minor repairs, and some painting.
