Dear Supporters:

As you may know Strengthen Our Sisters is a nonprofit organization that creates miracles in the lives of battered/homeless women and children. We have been working tirelessly for the past 40 years to end abuse, poverty and homelessness.
Strengthen Our Sisters has seven shelters, all providing housing and supportive services to hundreds of families each year. We have a total of 177 beds and the majority of beds are being occupied by children. We provide a wide range of supportive services, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We support families by assisting them in rebuilding their lives as they transition from fear, violence and dysfunction, to healthy, functioning, productive, independent families. We work with families to break the cycle of violence and poverty that if uninterrupted, will continue to the next generation. We have many services which include a 24 hour hotline, counseling, parenting, children's programs, art therapy, educational programs, two licensed daycare centers and a computer school.

Until recently we were receiving funding from the Department of Children and Families (DCF). Their funding helped support our shelter programs. Now, mainly because we refused to adhere to their policy of not keeping families over 60 days, they took away our funding of over $469,000. This unjust action has caused our program great suffering, especially to the families and the children that we serve.

Studies have shown that battered women that are forced out of shelters too soon have had no other recourse but to return back to their abusive home. This not only puts the woman at risk but also creates an unsafe environment for the children.
To help us in our fund raising efforts we are counting on you in this time of need. In order for us to continue to offer our families housing and support, we need your help.

Your donation to Strengthen Our Sisters will:
•  Help provide housing and supportive services to hundreds of needy mothers and their children this upcoming year.
•  Will help us continue to provide quality daycare and children's programming at Omni Day School (serving approximately 200 children each year)
•  Will help educate approximately 250 women this upcoming year with computer skills, life skills, parenting, job readiness, counseling and more…
