How to Help Someone Who is Being Battered
- Learn the facts about domestic violence.
- Don't make excuses for the perpetrator.
- Tell her that she's not the only person this has ever happened to.
- Tell her you care about her and want to help.
- Don't judge her.
- Don't tell her what you would have done in the same circumstances.
- Promise confidentiality. Keep your promise.
- Don't lie. Don't tell her you'll do something and then not do it.
- Don't tell her you can guarantee her safety.
- Don't make decisions for her.
- Help her with child care, transportation, and money.
- Offer to go with her to get help.
- Tell her that nothing that she has done justifies anyone hitting her.
- Help her to work out a safety plan.
