How to Help Someone Who is Being Battered

  • Learn the facts about domestic violence.
  • Don't make excuses for the perpetrator.
  • Tell her that she's not the only person this has ever happened to.
  • Tell her you care about her and want to help.
  • Don't judge her.
  • Don't tell her what you would have done in the same circumstances.
  • Promise confidentiality. Keep your promise.
  • Don't lie. Don't tell her you'll do something and then not do it.
  • Don't tell her you can guarantee her safety.
  • Don't make decisions for her.
  • Help her with child care, transportation, and money.
  • Offer to go with her to get help.
  • Tell her that nothing that she has done justifies anyone hitting her.
  • Help her to work out a safety plan.
