| OMNI Day School OMNI provides quality child care and licensed pre-school programs for the community and for mothers and children living at the shelter. Children are cared for by caring and qualified teachers and assistant teachers while mothers participate in job training, school programs, work programs, and self-improvement workshops. Pre-school classes are available for 3 and 4 year olds, and day care is provided for infants to 11 years in a creative child centered environment. Start Ahead is a residential support program for expectant mothers, teaching healthy habits, attitudes, and behaviors throughout pregnancy to insure healthy babies and good parenting skills. The program was launched with a grant from the NJ Department of Health in 1996 and it has been one of our most successful projects. The women attend weekly classes with a nurse-midwife and weekly parenting workshops. Positive Parenting provides mandatory weekly parenting training workshops for mothers and expectant mothers living at the shelter. Positive Parenting was established in 1991 to assist parents in developing the heightened skills necessary to manage today's daily challenges that face both parent and child. The sessions address such issues as: effective disciplining, relationship building skills, quality teaching techniques, setting goals for self and child, achieving compliance, and quality modeling skills. Time is allotted for questions that are specific to each mother's need. Each session incorporates role-playing, handouts and classroom instruction as its learning tools. The sessions also embody humor and a relaxed atmosphere in order to enhance the retention of information. www.positiveparenting.tv School Age Children's Counseling Program Our school age children's counseling program was started with a grant from the Karma Foundation. It provides age appropriate workshops to help children cope with stressors resulting from witnessing and/or experiencing domestic violence, moving to a new school, leaving friends behind, and living in a shelter environment. Children learn communication skills, and self-confidence through roll playing, art, discussions, and group projects.
